The Disciplines of the Spirit

Discipline Ten: Living As A Worshiper

Into the community you were called—the call was not meant for you alone; in the community of the called you bear your cross, your struggle, you pray.  You are not alone even in death, and on the Last Day you will be only one of the great congregation of Jesus Christ.  If you scorn the fellowship of the brethren, you reject the call of      Jesus Christ.                                                                                         DIETRICH BONHOEFFER, 1906 - 1945

BIG PEOPLE IDEA: Worship is to be the ultimate priority of every believer, not only because God is worthy of our worship but also because it is His designed means to arrange His ruling entry into our personal world and into those circumstances where His sovereign workings have placed us.  Worship is the capstone to these disciplines of the Spirit, because it opens the doorway to God’s superintendency and supernatural presence and power as the governing influences and purifying elements in all life issues.  Worship is also the pathway into prayer—the all encompassing discipline—and is prayer’s essential point of entry to the Father and of faith in His almightiness.

BIG PEOPLE PRACTICE: Let’s walk through the most basic ideas about worship—from the importance of gathering with others in congregation and community to the power of learning life’s pathway of progress through the building of private spiritual altars, as season follows season in our growth.  We will find that the practice and discipline of worship is the starting place for all of life in Christ, for it determines to whom we yield and what we will prioritize.  Wholehearted worship is essential to retaining childlikeness in spirit and Christlikeness in character, both of which flow from a constantly renewed humility before God’s presence and are sustained by the river of joy and life the flows from His throne.

Digging Deeper: My Personal Reflections...

Engage the text: Ask questions to see what answers the Scriptures provide: who, what, when, where, and how?

Know the text: What's the meaning for the original audience and then what is the meaning for me?

Listen, let the text speak: What is the Holy Spirit saying to me?

Meditate on the message: take note of what word or phrase stands out to you. Come back to that word or phrase throughout the day, being present to its impact and invitation.

Live in light of the text: Being: what does this say about my identity?  Doing: what are some actions for me to obey this week in order to maximize the impact of this message?

Share: If you were to share with a friend, in a sentence or two, a key insight from today’s message, what would that be?
